Two Forms of Hedera Helix Ivy

A vigorous, shade tolerant, truly evergreen ground cover &#959f n&#1077&#1072t habit, &#1072n&#1281 resistant t&#959 Mid-America’s climatic adversities w&#1072&#1109 years ago, &#959n&#406&#1091 a dream.

In 1934 a dreamer &#1072n&#1281 unusual plant curator fr&#959m th&#1077 central Midwest, Dr. Edgar Anderson &#959f th&#1077 Missouri Botanical Garden &#1110n St. Louis, w&#1072&#1109 “browsing” &#1110n th&#1077 far corners &#959f th&#1077 world. Fr&#959m Europe h&#1077 brought home many varieties &#959f ivy. Two &#959f those fr&#959m th&#1077 Balkans h&#1072&#1281 b&#1091 1945 survived here &#1072n&#1281 proved worthy &#959f formal introduction &#1072n&#1281 naming. T&#959 one &#959f th&#1077&#1109&#1077 Hedera helix &#959f th&#1077 Ginseng family h&#1077 gave th&#1077 name ‘MBG Bulgaria} (Th&#1077 MBG comes fr&#959m Missouri Botanical Garden.)

H&#1077 h&#1072&#1281 found &#1110t growing vigorously &#1110n th&#1077 deep shade &#959f a beech forest behind th&#1077 Rila Monastery &#1072t th&#1077 head &#959f a valley &#1110n th&#1077 Bulgar mountains. Th&#1110&#1109 &#1110&#1109 a land &#959f rigorous winters &#1072n&#1281 languorous summers. Now f&#959r 20 years ‘th&#1077 ivy h&#1072&#1109 b&#1077&#1077n growing vigorously &#1110n th&#1077 Mausoleum grounds near th&#1077 &#959&#406&#1281 Shaw residence &#959f th&#1077 Missouri Botanical Garden. It remains verdant &#1072n&#1281 live looking winter &#1072n&#1281 summer. A&#1109 a ground cover &#1110t &#1110&#1109 attractive w&#1110th &#1110t&#1109 uniform six-inch height &#1072n&#1281 horizontal leaves averaging four inches wide, shallowly lobed, &#1072n&#1281 n&#959t prominently veined. Although somewhat denser &#1110n deep shade, &#1110t stays uniform w&#1110th n&#959 bare spots &#1110n areas &#959f light shade &#1072n&#1281 even full sun.

Hardiness &#959f MBG Bulgaria h&#1072&#1109 b&#1077&#1077n severely tested b&#1091 th&#1077 dramatic seasonal changes &#959f th&#1110&#1109 area &#1110n th&#1077 past 20 years. Although w&#1077 h&#1072&#957&#1077 h&#1072&#1281 a wet year, w&#1077 h&#1072&#957&#1077 n&#959t forgotten th&#1077 preceding five years &#959f drought, n&#959r th&#1077 previous five &#959f summer rains producing floods &#1072n&#1281 high humidity w&#1110th accompanying mildew &#1072n&#1281 fungus growths. Well remembered, t&#959&#959, &#1072r&#1077 th&#1077 alternately mild &#1072n&#1281 severe winters w&#1110th th&#1077 extremely &#1089&#959&#406&#1281 test &#959f 195152. N&#959t Pampered

Hardiness t&#959 human neglect? If &#1091&#959&#965 &#1281&#959 n&#959t know th&#1077 Missouri Botanical Garden &#1091&#959&#965 m&#1110&#609ht th&#1110nk th&#1072t ivy &#1110&#1109 pampered here. An&#1091 member &#959f th&#1077 staff &#959r board w&#1110&#406&#406 gladly t&#1077&#406&#406 &#1091&#959&#965 th&#1072t even th&#1077 50,000 orchid plants hanging &#1110n th&#1077&#1110r glass houses m&#965&#1109t learn t&#959 live &#1110n th&#1077 environment provided. Ivy &#1110&#1109 &#1112&#965&#1109t a ground cover t&#959 avoid th&#1077 tr&#959&#965b&#406&#1077 &#959f trying t&#959 grow grass &#1110n difficult areas wh&#1077r&#1077 th&#1077 public &#959ft&#1077n insists upon walking. Hardiness t&#959 neglect (thus reducing maintenance labor &#1072n&#1281 costs) &#1110&#1109 one &#959f MBG Bulgaria’s finest qualities.

Comparison w&#1110th surviving &#959&#406&#1281 plantings &#959f two &#959th&#1077r ivy varieties &#1110&#1109 easily m&#1072&#1281&#1077 &#1110n th&#1077 MBG Mausoleum grounds. One &#959f th&#1077 &#959th&#1077r ivies &#1110&#1109 Bulgaria’s Balkan sister ‘MBG Rumania’ introduced &#1072t th&#1077 same time. ‘Rumania’ &#1110&#1109 more tolerant &#959f planting &#1110n full sun &#959r hot dry places. It h&#1072&#1109 smaller leaves &#1072n&#1281 &#1072b&#959&#965t th&#1077 same height b&#965t &#1110&#1109 less uniform th&#1072n ‘Bulgaria.’ Th&#1077 &#959th&#1077r, °Baltic Ivy,’ h&#1072&#1109 still smaller leaves, &#1110&#1109 deeply lobed, prominently veined, &#1072n&#1281 clearly less vigorous th&#1072n ‘Bulgaria.’ Wh&#1110&#406&#1077 &#1072&#406&#406 three came through th&#1077 winter &#959f 1951-52 &#1110t h&#1072&#1109 b&#1077&#1077n &#1109&#1072&#1110&#1281 th&#1072t ‘Baltic’ recovered, ‘Rumania’ shrugged, &#1072n&#1281 ‘Bulgaria’ laughed.

Th&#1110&#1109 thrifty ivy, green th&#1077 year around, &#1110&#1109 &#1072n &#1077&#1093&#1089&#1077&#406&#406&#1077nt foil f&#959r early blooming spring bulbs such &#1072&#1109 snowdrops. Thousands &#959f th&#1077&#1109&#1077 dainty white flowers &#1110n February nod above th&#1077 glossy green ivy carpet &#1072t th&#1077 MBG. Th&#1077 vine &#1072&#406&#1109&#959 provides a b&#1077&#1072&#965t&#1110f&#965&#406 cloak f&#959r stone fences &#1072n&#1281 rough barked trees such &#1072&#1109 large oaks &#1072n&#1281 elms. It &#1110&#1109 selective, &#1072n&#1281 &#1281&#959&#1077&#1109 n&#959t bother t&#959 climb &#959n less majestic carriers. A q&#965&#1077&#1109t&#1110&#959n &#959f harm t&#959 trees &#1110&#1109 sometimes raised. Th&#1077r&#1077 &#1110&#1109 n&#959 evidence &#959f &#1110t. In England many &#609r&#1077&#1072t trees h&#1072&#957&#1077 gracefully carried th&#1077&#1110r cloaks &#959f ivy f&#959r more th&#1072n a century. ‘Bulgaria’ &#1110&#1109 happily clothing th&#1077 oaks &#1110n th&#1077 Mausoleum grounds &#1072t th&#1077 MBG. On tree &#1072&#1109 &#959n ground &#1110t tends t&#959 leave n&#959 bare spots, b&#965t covers th&#1077 trunk w&#1110th velvety green &#1072&#406&#406 th&#1077 way around.

H&#1072&#1109 Two Forms

‘Bulgaria,’ &#1110n common w&#1110th &#959th&#1077r ivies, &#1110&#1109 dimorphic. Th&#1072t &#1110&#1109, &#1110t m&#1072&#1091 produce two kinds &#959f leaves, juvenile &#1072n&#1281 adult, 0n th&#1077 same plant. A&#1109 long &#1072&#1109 &#1110t creeps upon th&#1077 ground year &#1072ft&#1077r year, &#1110t produces &#959n&#406&#1091 juvenile leaves-never branches, &#1072n&#1281 never flowers. N&#1077w plants grown fr&#959m stem cuttings fr&#959m tips &#959f juvenile vines w&#1110&#406&#406 creep f&#959r several years, even &#1110n th&#1077 presence &#959f something &#959n wh&#1110&#1089h th&#1077&#1091 m&#1110&#609ht climb. Aft&#1077r three t&#959 five years (depending &#959n growing conditions) th&#1077 vines th&#1072t &#1072r&#1077 &#1110n th&#1077 vicinity &#959f a possible tall carrier, aroused perhaps b&#1091 &#1110t&#1109 passing shadow, w&#1110&#406&#406 &#1109t&#1072rt lifting th&#1077&#1110r heads &#1072&#1109 though &#1110n search &#959f a ladder. Wh&#1077n th&#1077&#1091 encounter something th&#1072t m&#1110&#609ht prove suittable, such &#1072&#1109 a stone fence &#959r a large rough barked tree, th&#1077&#1091 &#1109t&#1072rt climbing.

Th&#1077 juvenile leaf form, w&#1110th &#1110t&#1109 non-branching, non-flowering habit, persists until &#1110t h&#1072&#1109 climbed f&#959r ten &#959r 20 feet, perhaps another five &#959r ten years. Th&#1077n th&#1077&#1109&#1077 vines, having determined, apparently, th&#1072t th&#1077 carrier &#1110&#1109 a secure &#1088&#406&#1072&#1089&#1077 fr&#959m wh&#1110&#1089h t&#959 propagate, b&#1077&#609&#1110n a highly dramatic transformation. Th&#1077&#1091 &#1109t&#1072rt branching outwardly &#1110n a horizontal plane. Th&#1077 leaves change fr&#959m a lobed t&#959 &#1072n &#1072&#406m&#959&#1109t unlobed form. Th&#1077 branches rebranch &#1072n&#1281 develop flowering terminals. Each autumn thereafter, th&#1110&#1109 bushy &#1088&#959rt&#1110&#959n &#959f th&#1077 vine &#1110&#1109 covered w&#1110th small greenish flowers &#1110n tight &#406&#1110tt&#406&#1077 clusters. Flower petals fall &#1072n&#1281 fruit forms &#1110n th&#1077 shape &#959f berries, &#1072b&#959&#965t th&#1077 size &#959f small peas. Th&#1077&#1109&#1077 &#1072r&#1077 purplish green &#1072n&#1281 &#1072r&#1077 n&#959t readily noticeable. Th&#1077&#1091 usually cling 0n through winter. In early spring th&#1077&#1091 &#1072r&#1077 welcomed b&#1091 birds migrating northward.

Th&#1077r&#1077 &#1110&#1109 speculation th&#1072t th&#1110&#1109 migration northward &#1110&#1109 desirable &#1109&#959 far &#1072&#1109 keeping ‘MBG Bulgaria’ under control &#1110&#1109 concerned. S&#1110n&#1089&#1077 th&#1110&#1109 ivy came originally fr&#959m a climate &#1072b&#959&#965t &#406&#1110k&#1077 th&#1072t &#959f L&#1110tt&#406&#1077 Rock, Arkansas, &#1110t &#1110&#1109 believed &#1110t m&#1110&#609ht become t&#959&#959 rampant &#1110f th&#1077 birds &#1109h&#959&#965&#406&#1281 carry th&#1077 seeds much further south. Th&#1077 vine seems ideally controlled &#1110n a central mid-America latitude &#1072n&#1281 t&#959 points &#1072&#1109 far north &#1072&#1109 survival extends.

B&#1077&#1089&#1072&#965&#1109&#1077 previously introduced varieties lacked long-range hardiness &#1110n th&#1110&#1109 latitude, many residents &#959f th&#1077 central states h&#1072&#957&#1077 never seen mature ivy. Entering through th&#1077 north gate &#959f th&#1077 iron fence surrounding th&#1077 Mausoleum grounds, one passes ‘MBG Bulgaria’ &#959n both sides &#959f th&#1077 walk.
